How does online math tutoring work?
Online tutoring is one-to-one and interactive. During each session, your student and I work together using an online whiteboard where we can write, solve problems, and work through challenging concepts step by step. Students can ask questions as they arise, and I can see their work in real time so I can identify where they are getting stuck and help them move forward.
What math courses do you tutor?
How do you determine what my student needs help with?
Every student is different. I begin by looking at what the student is currently learning (by seeing what is being assigned for homework) and observing how they approach problems. This helps me identify specific concepts that are causing difficulty as well as any gaps in foundational skills that may be getting in the way. From there, I can focus our tutoring time on the areas where additional instruction and practice will make the greatest difference. I have an enormous supply of practice problems that I being in as needed for further practice as needed.
Can you help if my student has gaps from earlier math courses?
Yes. Absolutely. Difficulty in a current math course is often connected to concepts or skills that were not fully mastered earlier. When I identify one of these gaps, I can address it while continuing to support the student with their current coursework. Strengthening these foundational skills can make new material easier to understand and help the student move forward with greater confidence. I also informally assess these areas each time we meet to determine the student's level of mastery (or to determine if further reteaching is needed).
Do you help with homework, quizzes, and tests?
Yes. We can use current homework, upcoming quizzes, and tests as part of our tutoring sessions. However, the goal is not simply to complete an assignment or prepare for one test. I use the student’s current coursework as an opportunity to strengthen understanding, address areas of confusion, and develop the skills needed to solve similar problems independently in the future.
How does tutoring help students become more independent?
My goal is for students to become less dependent on tutoring as their understanding and confidence grow. During sessions, I encourage students to explain their reasoning, make connections between concepts, and work through problems with increasing independence. Over time, I gradually reduce the amount of guidance I provide so students become more comfortable tackling unfamiliar problems on their own.
How often should my student meet with a tutor?
The ideal tutoring schedule depends on the student’s needs, current course, and goals. Many students benefit from meeting once or twice each week, while a student preparing for an important test or working through significant gaps may benefit from additional support for a period of time. During the free consultation, we can discuss your student’s situation and determine a schedule that makes sense.
What equipment does my student need for online tutoring?
Students need a computer or tablet with a reliable internet connection. Because math involves writing equations, graphs, and calculations, a touchscreen device with a stylus or an inexpensive pen tablet can make working on the online whiteboard much easier. I can help you determine the best setup for your student before the first tutoring session.
How do I pay for tutoring?
Payments are handled securely online. After tutoring is scheduled, you will receive information about setting up your payment method and how billing works. This keeps the payment process simple so our tutoring time can stay focused on your student’s math needs.
